I mentioned before that I was playing Final Fantasy VI and I’m almost finished with the game. Since I’m almost done, I figured I would share some thoughts on the game.

To start, I play the original SNES version of the game. This was one of the most sought after Final Fantasy games to me and it’s been one I’ve wanted to play for a long time. We have all heard the debates about whether Final Fantasy VI is better or VII is better. Before playing this game, my favorite Final Fantasy was Final Fantasy IX. There are a lot of reasons why I believed that and I will share in a different blog. So, let’s start talking about the story:

Story

Final Fantasy games has always had some great stories up through the first one, all the way until Final Fantasy X (XI had a story? …I kid…or do I?). Regardless which one is your favorite, Squaresoft always nailed the story. Final Fantasy VI features another lovable cast rich with personalities that will rival real human beings. You begin as Terra, a Magitech Knight who’s sole reason for being is to be a soldier for the Empire. The Empire is looking for a relics (not relating to relics you can use in the game) that have magical powers beyond measure. These magical stones are called Espers. Which the game focuses on quite a bit. An Esper, is basically a summon. An eidolon or an Aeon in other games.

Then we met Kefka. The main antagonist of the game. Kefka is the general of the empire. His exact details aren’t known in the game, but he is one of the best soldiers the Empire has; even though you kick has ass throughout much of the game. At one point you see the true Kefka and how he really can be pain in the ass. Terra and Kefka have a lot to do with each other. And they clash a bunch of times. They are both caught in a conflict that would spell the rebirth of the War of the Magi, that almost destroyed all of civilization nearly a millennium ago.

So, basically, Final Fantasy VI and Final Fantasy X has the same story. (I kid again, but they are similar in a way).

Characters

Remember how I said that Final Fantasy VI had a lot of personality? Well, that’s because there are a lot of characters to talk to…and to play as. Some that will stay in your party forever and some that show up for a minute. I have already talked about Terra and Kefka, but allow me to delve into what they can do for you in battle. Also note: There are 13 characters in the game, I’m only going through about 4-6 of them here.

Terra - Terra is your mage. There I said it. She is also the only mage that I know, who is the central protagonist. Final Fantasy creator Yasunori Kitase said that there has no main protagonist. However, given the fact that she’s part of a certain clan and that she is heavily focused, I truly believe that she is the main protagonist. She is a huge magic caster who will be one of the most focused when it comes to casting spells. Terra is the only one who can inherit learn Ultima at LVL 99; so she has that going for her. She is also a decent fighter in her own right. Even with standard weapons, she kicks a lot of ass.

Locke - Lock is a treasure steal–err…TREASURE HUNTER. He’s also another character that you meet at the beginning of the game. Locke is one of the better characters in the game even if only for his steal ability, and later Capture, which you can use from a relic. He’s probably the one with the most spunk out of all of them.

Edgar - Edgar is the king of Figaro and probably one of the strongest characters in the game physically. Edgar controls South Figaro and is loyal to the Empire…until Kefka decides to change that. Edgar is a powerhouse using Tools. Tools are essentially another way to physically attack an enemy. He isn’t so hot on the magic, but tools and later his Dragoon abilities are top notch.

Sabin – Sabin is the best character in the game. Not only is his attack with claws devastating, his Blitz attacks are off the charts. There is not one point in this game where Sabin isn’t broken beyond repair. The moment you pick up Sabin is when he is broken. Blitz attacks are physical and at time magical attacks that can devastate any enemy in the game. Just talk to Grand Train after Sabin suplexes the damn thing. Also, his last attack will just kill anyone in one hit.

Celes – Celes is just like Terra in the fact that she is an Empire soldier, however, she is much higher class. She is infused with magicite that allows her to cast magic and learn more of them. Of course, just like everyone else, she can learn her magic through Espers, but she also can learn through leveling herself up. Celes can also dish it out physically as well. She has a ton of great armor and is comparable to Terra and even Edgar.

Shadow - The last character I would like to discuss is Shadow. Shadow is one of the most unique characters in the game (and there are plenty of them). Shadow is a ninja with a dog named Interceptor (If I get a dog, I’m naming him that). Shadow has a very weird history and you’ll catch glimpses of his story through the gameplay. But, most of the time, he’ll just leave your party…bastard. Shadow can deal the damage as well. Mostly physically, he can throw items at enemies. Items like swords, rods and even some custom weapons like Shurikens and Skeans.

Gameplay

This is classic Final Fantasy here. This is one of the most advanced battle systems and gameplay systems that had come out to date. Not only does it feature full range on how you can equip your character, but the leveling system works in such a way that allows your players to learn whatever they want. The only thing that’s persistent with characters is that they all have their own set of abilities whether it be Tools, Steal, or Blitz.

Battle is pretty simple. You have the Active Time Battle system that Square has been known for; I noticed that toward the end of the game, enemy scripts were really fast. There is a lot of action in the Fanatic’s Tower that really keeps you on your toes. Most of the game has great pacing.

You learn abilities in different ways. If you want magic spells certain characters can learn them on their own, while others can learn them using Espers. At one point in the game, you will start gaining AP for your magic spells. I found this a pretty good way to learn magic and extremely logical. More logical than I can say for learning magic through items, ala Final Fantasy IX. You can learn magic at different rates depending on the type of magic. At certain points you can learn certain spells faster with other Espers. This makes learning lower level spells faster for characters with no magic.

You can equip a bunch of items to use as protection and your offense. You can also equip Relics; in this game, it’s akin to accessories in other games. All relics have a certain effect. Economizer will allow a magic caster to cast all magic for just 1MP. This is HUGE for later parts of the game and one that I put on Terra at all times. Other relics like the Sprint Boots will allow the user to walk faster in the world and the Dragoonboots allows the user to use the command “Jump”. This allows the user to use a very powerful strike on an enemy.

Music

Nobuo Uematsu is back at it again. This time, he comes out full force and delivers one of the best soundtracks in the game’s history. During my play I have been listening to the game’s soundtrack on the side and one track or rather one set of tracks that got my attention was played during the Opera: Maria and Draco. That’s the play that happens in the World of Balance. It features a whole set of songs that play during that whole scene. The opera begins with a song called: Aria de Mezzo Carattere.

Aria begins the opera with a ho hum attempt at trying to replicate singing. But, the song itself is pretty outstanding. Which then brings me to the The Wedding which sets up the tone for the battle of Ralse and Draco over Maria. During the The Wedding scene a fierce battle that eventually ends with Draco winning the hand of Maria and in the end or “Grand Finale?”, Maria then thanks Draco for his bravery. If you wish to hear the orchestral version of these songs (they’re all in one), check out Opera Maria and Draco.

Of course, the Final Fantasy VI’s soundtrack is more than just the opera. The battle themes once again make their appearance and all three of them are very fun to listen to and love. Another theme that I thought was rather good was the entitled Dark World which, of course, is the theme for when you enter the World of Ruin. I should also mention that Dancing Mad, the final ending boss theme, is also amazing…but you should already know that by now.

Overall

Final Fantasy VI is a grand game. I am still in the midst of finishing it, but this impression has turned out to be a whole review. And since I am the closing moments, I figured I would write this 1500 word essay about why this game is good. But, is it better than other Final Fantasy’s? I will discuss that in a future blog. Final Fantasy VI is a great game. Probably one of the best in the series. I have finally done myself the favor in playing this game to see for myself. Kefka is a maniac. Locke is dapper and Terra is strong. The world is full of mystery and wonder and the gameplay hits a great balance of grind and exploratory.

Final Fantasy VI is a wonder and one of the best SNES era games to come out during its time and should be remembered for years and years to come.

*clears throat*

Sorry…Anyway. I have a Youtube channel. I play games on this Youtube channel. At least, I like to play games on this channel, when I have the time to record and edit the videos. Some of the stuff I have done in the past relied on technology, but ever since becoming more and more of a journalist, I have wanted to talk about games as I play them. Go ahead. Check back at my older vidoes and see what I was doing. They were more unboxing videos and tech videos. My goal was to find my niche back in the day when doing these videos.

My favorite video on my channel is my Dreamcast video. Back in 2009, Think Geek was doing a very awesome deal they had unused Dreamcasts and Think Geek was selling them for $99.99. Probably some of the coolest things I did on the channel was unbox it for the world. I got the system, ironically, on September 9th, 2009. Exactly 10 years to the day when the original Dreamcast released.

I love the interaction that comes with the Youtube. If you noticed the comments; I get so many color people that reply to my videos. It’s almost like…addiction getting comments, because I love to reply to all of them.

Youtube a great way to get something across. You can either troll, be resourceful or just plain talk out of your butt!

Lucky enough to grab a pass to the Penny Arcade Expo this year? Want to meet me there? Sure you do! I will be attending the Expo yet again this year. I mean, I must be crazy not too. It’s so convenient that the expo takes place in Boston again this year. It’s not like I’m from there or something.

The only lame part about going to PAX this year is the fact that if I do decide to; I may also be going to the Game Developers Conference in San Francisco…and I would have to be there the last day of PAX!

What makes both conferences so special is that they are both related to my passion. There is, however, a special connection with the Game Developers Conference. In which I am lucky enough to be a conference associate everywhere and be around a great big group of people. These people work equally as hard to make sure the conference is running smooth. We’re like a great big family. I have made some many friendships over the past three GDC’s I have worked at and it’s always a pleasure to see them again, year after year.

PAX, on the other hand is at home. I don’t have to fly. I don’t have to take a taxi in. I can wake up in my own bed and go to the convention center on my own volition. While traveling is fun and all, it’s just as much fun as waking up in your own bed sometimes!

Regardless, PAX is fun. GDC is just as much fun. I can’t wait to see more of you at PAX this year and even more of the family in San Francisco.

You know you who you are…

Here is the LittleBigPlanet review that I posted on Broken Joysticks!

What do you get when you take a humongous game that is based on your own imagination and you shrink it down to fit in your hands? That is LittleBigPlanet for the Playstation Vita. LBP Vita is an original release for the Sony’s newest handheld and one that many gamers have been waiting for and it’s now here to play. So what makes this version of Little BigPlanetVita so endearing to fans is it’s cutesy way of telling a story, it’s simple yet in-depth gameplay that just has a way with you when you play a game like this. If you have ever played a licensed game that was awesome back in the day like Cool Spot or one of the older Nickelodeon games, LittleBigPlanet will make you feel like you’re a kid again.

In terms of gameplay. LittleBigPlanet is still LittleBigPlanet. What do I mean by this? Well, the gameplay is more or less the same as the console title. Let it be known that this is by no means a bad thing. LBP’s gameplay mechanics are still top notch as they always have been. With the addition of touch controls, it is now even better and in a class all of it’s own. There will be times in certain levels where you will you will need to trigger part of the level in order to proceed. To trigger a level event, some parts of the level will be highlighted a blue or green color. A blue color means you will be able to touch the front screen and PUSH a part of a level in to trigger an action from the level. It could a wheel where you can grab and tumble on to a new part of a level. A green piece of a level means you can PUSH part of a level forward using the back touch pad. As an example you can push an object towards you using the green part of the level and can make some good platforms where you can jump on to continue the level.

Use of the Vita’s gyroscope also comes into play in some very fun ways. The addition of a ball where you can roll around or a cart can get you into a new area of the game. Tilting the Vita right, you will make you move to the right half of the screen progressing farther on the screen. I found that it could be a chore to move him the correct way and holding the Vita at the same time to make sure that your Sackboy could move around correctly. At times this could be a bit cumbersome.

Speaking of combersome, there is a point where you get to control your Sackboy in a flying contraption (you know how Sackboy loves his contraptions) and you’re given the task to navigate…using the back Touch Pad. This was a great idea on paper, but when using back touch pad to navigate around is a pain in the ass. I would constantly lift my finger a bit and then be thrown into a different direction. You will also have to be very precise if you want to bypass floating items in the level. I found the flying controls to be a little daunting, especially if you’re a new user to the Vita. The back touch pad, does respond rather well however, and this was the only dark spot I found using it.

The biggest part of LittleBigPlanet is always and will always be item collecting and customization. If you are worried that LBP was lacking the creative department, do not fear. Sony has done it’s part to reward the player with, which I believe, even more goodies than it’s predecessor. You are still able to craft levels to your hearts content. Using the front touch pad, the creator can be even more precise than the previous games as you will be able to use your own finger to create a massive level. One of the downsides that exist is that, you cannot use too much of one material on one piece of geometry, so it will cancel out if you use too much. However, you can create a whole new piece of geometry which you can just continue after making your old one. In levels you can pick up a ton of new stickers, items, and other goodies to make your levels as awesome as you want to make them. The only creative limit is your own creative mindset.

The game’s story is as quirky as ever. It actually has some cool elements. You’re in the world. Player’s are thrusted into the story of Carnivalia. A world where all of your amusement park dreams can and maybe come true. You play the through this worlds that have a ton of creative flair and colors. Among the way you will meet a cast of friendly and lovable characters that will make you laugh and maybe even cry. The game’s levels and art direction is probably the best on the Vita so far.

LittleBigPlanet Vita is a game for all ages. It incorporates a lot of the aspects you will find right on your Playstation 3. It does feature cross play and works like a charm, just as the game does to you all the time. It features a cute story with rambunctious characters and plays just as you would expect. If you have a Vita and want the ultimate experience of LittleBigPlanet on your mobile device, then pick this one up. You won’t be disappointed.

Very proud of this review of Sonic Adventure 2 HD! You can also view it on Broken Joysticks!

Oh Sega. You have come a long way since the Sonic the Hedgehog reboot for the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3. You have been trying your hardest to give us a great Sonic game since those days where you were at your lowest point. With the last games: Sonic Generations and Sonic the Hedgehog 4: Episodes I and II, it seems as though you’re starting to come back into good graces with the fans.

With Sonic Adventure 2 HD and the plethora of other old Dreamcast titles, it seems as though Sega is going back to the past to look for some inspiration. It’s good that they have come back to Sonic Adventure 2, because it was one of the most controversial titles during it’s time on the Dreamcast and now we have the full version just sitting on our Xbox 360 and PS3 hard drives. So, does Sonic Adventure 2 bring the goods?

Let’s start with the story. Sonic Adventure 2 HD is just like it’s predecessor in a few ways, but very different in a lot of ways. You still have Sonic and his friends trying to save the world from a menacing threat. Dr. Eggman unleashes a new enemy Shadow from a factory on island off the coast of Station Square. Shadow’s goal is to activate a space colony’s secret weapon to avenge the death of Eggman’s Grandfather’s daughter who Shadow had a special bond. In order to see the events unfold, you must play through both the Hero and the Dark side of the <del>force</del> story.

Sonic and Shadow duke it out on the streets.

Just like Sonic’s before it, you play with Sonic and his friends. In this game you will get to play as Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles on the Hero story and Eggman, Shadow and another newcomer Rouge the Bat in the Dark story. Sonic and Shadow are both played as a speed type. You race toward the finishing goal in order to beat a level. While playing the level, you are also tasked with defeating as many enemies can to rank up a chain. The more of a chain the better the bonus points you can rack up. The more points you rack up, the better the rank you will get. Rank ranges from an A rating to an E rating. The rank system has been a great way to show off your skills in the game and is the first Sonic game to use the feature.

In Sonic and Shadow’s levels, you can also do a new technique that was introduced to the series: grinding. Grinding will make you zip through the level at incredible speeds. There is a level in the game that will utilize the grinding to the fullest. Grinding, however, is not used as much as I would have liked and the pacing of the use of the feature at times grinds to a halt. Grinding can also become a little cumbersome in which if you try to switch rails, where multiple rails exist and you can find yourself falling to your death if you’re not careful.

As Tails and Eggman, you play as walking battle mechs. As you proceed through the level, you will notice that your time will start to soar high, but so will your score. Again, just like the Sonic levels, defeating multiple enemies will boost your score and having a higher score at the end of Tail’s/Eggman’s level will be the deciding factor in your rank at the end. These levels were more of a slow paced/power levels and while they were fun to play, I often found myself dying by mysteriously falling off a platform with the slightest touch of the analog stick.

CHAO KARATE!

The final set of levels are based on treasure hunting that quite possibly are the worst levels in the game. You play as Knuckles and Rouge to find pieces of the Master Emerald, Chaos Emeralds or keys. The radar system is trash as it is color based depending on where you are in relation to the item. Even then, when you’re right on top of it, you need to hit the area just right to find it. Not to mention that some levels are humongous and finding the items fast are key to a better ranking.

The basis of the game is to get to the end point of the map with the exception of Knuckles and Rouge’s levels. You also have the ability to get power-ups and new abilities. The invincibility, ring, and speed power-ups are back and you can also get new abilities. Sonic can obtain Light Speed Shows to collect a lot of rings in a line; Eggman can obtain a hover ability so he can jump and glide through long distances; Knuckles get obtain metal gloves so he can dig through dirt and other soft ground. All characters can obtain upgrades.

There are other cool features such as the Chao system where you can give your pet Chao cool abilities and looks. You can teach your Chao new abilities and race them against other Chao. You can make your pet your own by changing it’s allegiance to a Hero or toward the Dark side. It’s pretty cool system, but unfortunately there is no way for you to trade your Chao to another player or vice versa. There is also no VMU support as well since you no longer have the VMU system as the Dreamcast did.

Sonic Adventure 2 HD also comes with a multiplayer component as well. You can use a multitude of characters like Sonic and Shadow to race and even Chaos from the original game and use them to fight with other characters. In this mode, you will also also have the option to use special abilities. You can use abilities like Sonic Wind to disorient your opponent, steer them off the level and beat them into submission. Unfortunately however, this mode does not contain an online multiplayer option and the only interaction you have with others online is a Leaderboard where you can post your high scores. With the lack of online multiplayer, it’s pretty unfortunate that Sega and Sonic Team couldn’t add something cool here. Back in the day, this one one of the coolest parts about the game and something that I could always come back to with a friend. The addition of online would have made this a pretty cool experience.

Knuckles vs. King Boo Boo. One of the many bosses!

The game looks as good as it did on the Dreamcast. However, there is major pop-in that may take your eyes time to adjust and may end up losing a life. In my play through, I never had that bad of a problem with it. Another negative I saw is that the cutscenes reset to 4:3 where as most of the game is in 16:9, which was very disappointing. The music in the game is an acquired taste. I have been a big fan of the music and even though the music is extremely corny (especially the rapping for Knuckles’ levels), it has a certain charm and is enjoyable.

There is so much more that I want to say about Sonic Adventure 2 HD. I want to tell you that you should go out and play this game. Most Sonic fans will dig the game. If you’re not a Sonic fan, then you may want to ask a friend who has it to play it before you buy it yourself. It was one of the best games on the Dreamcast during it’s time and one of my personal favorites. That is what hurts the most about this review; Live and Learn!

You know what sucks nowadays? This rivalry on phones and carriers. It’s like a first world civil war on the internet. iOS vs. Android. Apple vs. Samsung. Verizon vs. AT&T. They all make similar products with very different specifications and hardware. But, at the end of the day, they’re still just a phone. The all make a phone call, they all access the internet and they all can receive email.

Most of this “rivalry” is all based on the consumers love for each product. One of the very few reasons why I don’t hold any loyalty to any particular OS is because it’s all silly rivalry bull crap. I own both products of Apple and Google using with the OSes and I have never had an issue with either of them. I currently own a Nexus 7. The Nexus 7, if you don’t know already, is a 7″ tablet that is perfect for gaming and reading. It’s also a good size if you like to write things on a tablet. The size is just perfect for reading a book as you can totally hold it like a book.

One of the best tablets available.

Now on the other side of the fence, is iOS. There are plenty of reasons why you should love the first real OS for a phone. For one, the app store is massive. While you don’t have as many free apps as you do with the Google Play Store, the apps you do have are of high quality and do a great job at doing what you need to do quickly. Another thing that attracts me to iOS devices are the devices themselves. I currently own an iPhone 5 and it’s one of the most sleekest phones I have ever seen and held. The Lightning connector is more than just a name. The cable is indeed lightning fast. My old iPhone would take hours to be fully charged. With the Lightning connector, the iPhone 5 can charge in less than an hour. This is a breakthrough in the connectors and I hope that another connector or rival connector comes out in the near future for Android devices. My experiences with the mini-USB has not been the most impressive. At times the mini-USB would break or the connector inside the phone would be dented and would be hassle.

The new iPhone 5 boasts LTE and a bigger screen

But, what do I choose as the best of the best? Does it really matter? Do you really need features like NFC (Near Field Communication) when not every where even has the technology? Do you really need the most features when the majority of things you will find are on both OSes? The answer is No.

Let me be real here. Both the iOS and Android are the same thing. The big difference will come down to hardware. While Apple is closed and Android is mostly wide open, the one thing about these hardware limitation is because Apple believes that they have perfected the devices. Even Google doesn’t think that they have perfected hardware and most OEMs don’t either.

However, the luxury of having the ability to add more memory and a new battery is just that, a luxury. I do not have any problems with bad batteries or space because I choose to buy the amount of memory they have. In the longrun, I do suggest if you want a cheaper solution to memory and batteries replacements is to go with Android. But, if you’re not interested in changing your memory or you are comfortable with whatever you have and want a reliable OS, then go with iOS and the iPhone.

Which brings me to my next point. Devices. With Apple, you have the iPhone. There are different versions like the iPhone 4, 4S and now the 5. Android however, has a ton options to choose from and not all of them are good. My old phone was an HTC Thunderbolt. The first 4G phone out on Verizon’s network. The reason why the phone failed is because of the severe lack of support and the lack of OS updates. Thunderbolt is still running Gingerbread as its OS. We are now on Jelly Bean and Thunderbolt owners have been with an OS update since the beginning of the year. The constant reminder that HTC has done poorly with the phone is apparent to everyone.

Apple vs. Android.

With the iPhone, you are almost guaranteed a new update at least once a year. Of course, there are problems with Apple’s resolve as well. Apple will limit a lot of the functionality on their older phones. The iPhone 4 went without Siri and older iPods do not support turn by turn directions.

What I want to say about this “war” is that it’s stupid. It’s serves no purpose to be a rabid fanboy of any OS. They are both awesome for what they are and I think all cell phone fans should be happy there is competition like this. But, you don’t have to be a jerk about it. It’s just a phone, bro.

Hey guys. I’m a reddit lurker. I mean, who really isn’t anyway? I like to go at least once a day and I have been reading and seeing a lot of amazing things that people do and people will post. Today, of course is no exception. I like to, every so often, go on my Facebook and post something that I find really interesting that I find there. I didn’t even have to look very long to find what I was looking for and the comic shown below is nothing short of extraordinary.

This comic was submitted by: Parsignia

If you have every been to Gamestop, then you know, at times they have some very weird policies in place about trade-ins and returns. It not always goes the way you want it to sometimes. If you know their technique in trade-ins, you can make some killer deals like I have in the past. In this comic, this poor guy just wants to trade in two games to get another game. The game he wants is Vanquish, however, the game isn’t part of the promotion that Gamestop is throwing. He then asks if Halo: Reach is part of the promotion. The clerk is confused and says that you only have a PS3. The poor guy then says he has both consoles and Gamestop finally gives up Halo: Reach. The clerk then tells the poor guy that he has 1 day to give it back for a full refund spelled “refound” or one week if it’s broken.

He then says he doesn’t like the game and can use his full refund back. After getting his full refund, he asked for Vanquish; ending the comic.

Gamestop has a lot of weird promotions that don’t include certain games. It could be because they are trying to get rid of stock or they are trying to be a good business. It could also be a publisher interfering with the sale as they don’t want discounts on certain games. There is a lot to consider, but a lot of people don’t realize it. This lad was smart enough to realize that if he got his full refund, he would be able to get Vanquish for free.

Guess they didn’t think that one through, eh? Of course, I wonder how many people would fall for that at the store?

I can’t say I’m very surprised that this got cancelled. It’s kind of appalling for a massive game company that used to be the king of the basketball video game just have a hard time trying to beat the new king. 2K Sports. The NBA 2K series has taken off in a direction that I think nobody saw coming. It’s also very surprising that…it’s 2K Games beating the snot out of them. They haven’t had much luck in the sports department other than NBA 2K. For one, MLB 2K is an abysmal mess that needs a gimmick, a $1 million dollar gimmick, mind you and the one hockey game they put out wasn’t the talk of the town either.

Now, I don’t hate EA, even though they are the corporate equivalent of a piece of crap. They make a lot of great games like: SSX and Madden ’13. Not to mention they are now very strong in the mobile market scene as well. But, what’s the deal EA Sports? NBA Elite never saw the light of day and now the epic return of NBA Live is shelved for another year?

If I were you, I’d thrown in the towel. Keep making Fight Night better.
